I live in Winnipeg, Manitoba.  It is a city of close to 800,000, geographically located in the center of Canada.  We have 4 main Quilt shops and several general fabric stores where you can purchase quilting fabric:

Rural Manitoba is rich with quilting history.  Quilt Manitoba is the best source of information for all things quilting related in the province.

I am a member of Manitoba Prairie Quilters, Textile and Fibre Artists of Manitoba, belong to the South Enders Satellite group, and attend Crescentwood Community Centre mini quilt retreats.

Hi Judy. I was at your ruler work demo in Wpg in April. I see from your website you have a Juki TL2010Q as have I. I have the Juki ruler foot. Do you use 1/4 ” rulers with it? I am interested in some of Handi quilter templates and wonder if they will be too thick. The other choice is Westalee HS. It is so hard to figure out which rulers to buy just for a start. Thank you

    • So nice to hear from you! The 1/4” won’t be too thick. I have used them and Some of mine are as much as 3/8” thick. I have had more problems with them being too thin. Good luck! Don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any problems. I am busy painting and moving my studio right now but hope to do more ruler guided quilting in the fall.

    Hi Judy,
Came across your site via a link in one of the quilting sites I follow. I like your ruler work ideas, I have mainly Westalee rulers, being in Oz we were being loyal to a local business, however it is now gone to the US, so thankfully I bought enough for what Ill need, as postage will make them very expensive, I also have a couple of Leah Day ones and Angela Walters. I have just purchased a Juki TL2010 and slowly coming to grips with it, am enjoying it so far! Hope you keep warm, here we’re waiting for the summer heat to arrive!

    • Thanks for contacting me! I just love ‘meeting’ quilters from around the world. We have been a little on the cold side but it’s warm inside – a perfect excuse to stay indoors and quilt. Enjoy your rulers, and your new machine!

  6. Hi, I just ”’found” your site and love your work. I am working on a Christmas project using Laural Burch fabric………….don’t you just LOVE he “stuff”? Anyway, I cannot seem to find her “Peace” Moon pattern and wondered if you could be of help locating one that I could purchase. Any help that you can give will be appreciated. Take care and be safe. Jo Ann Andrews

    • Yes, Laural Burch was ahead of her time. Very unique designs. Sorry for the delay in responding. I know where there is a book with the Peace Moon pattern but have not been able to get a hold of the person who has it. If I do, and they still have it, I will contact you.

    Hi Judy.
I’ve been reading your tutorials about RQ. They are very informative. I have purchased the SewSteady Westalee Ruler Foot Starter Set. I want to quilt a baby quilt with an all over pattern instead of breaking it down into squares. I specifically like the Baptist Fan. Would it be a good starter project? Do you have any other suggestions for all over quilting and/or maybe a 2nd or 3rd ruler for beginners?
I’ve been quilting a lot during the pandemic. Hoping to up my game. FMQ is not my friend. Lol. I know y’all are in a deep freeze. I’m in Columbia, South Carolina. It’s 37 degrees and raining…guess I should count my blessings.
    Take care and thank you!
    Leeia

    • Hi Leeia! Yes we are in a deep freeze – but we like to say its a dry cold. Our houses are warm and it is a good excuse to stay in and quilt!
Good luck with your ruler quilting. The Baptist Fan is a good design and there are U-Tube video’s that can really help you. Other good rulers to add to the starter set would be a longer (13″) straight ruler, and a larger Arc ruler. The ones you have are good – they fit nicely in the hand, and give you a feel for the movement, The benefit of a longer ruler is that it stretches diagonally across a block – giving smoother, straighter lines (put extra grip on the back). A simple cross-hatch is always classic and might be easier than the Baptist Fan, but the choice is yours. Just start and keep going! You will improve with each project, and your FMQ will improve too. Win, Win.

I am a starter up, came across your ruler stitchwork for beginners 101 and got the instructions from Pintrest. Dont know if you placed it on Pintrest. But NO WHERE can I find indications of the block sizes and the fabric requirements. Is there any way that I could access it.

    • Hi Karen. Thanks for your interest in my ruler quilting designs. You obviously found my blog so I would suggest you enter ruler quilting into the search box and you will be able to find all the posts with detailed instructions and measurements. The first block (a ruler Quilting 101- Block 1) was posted sept 28, 2017 but there was a prep post before that, and even instructions for making a bag to store your rulers in. I used 18” squares and made 6 blocks. Good luck!

I am very interested in some private ruler work instruction on a domestic machine.

Hi. I’m looking for someone to make me a quilt. I have something specific in mind.

I enjoyed your wool quilt presentation – I watched it on the MPQ Facebook site

  12. I am Malaika Sutter, a PhD student from the University of Bern, Switzerland. I am planning a research stay in the U.S. and Canada as my dissertation focuses on contemporary North American textile arts and their representation in prose texts. I was pointed to you by MPQ and while browsing your website I noticed some quilts that particularly relate to Canada and Manitoba. My aim is to better understand the textile arts and quilting practices and tradition in Canadian cultures, its diverse manifestations and meanings and its differentiations from and affinities with the American quilt / textile arts tradition. I was wondering if you would have time to meet in person to answer some questions? I am planning on visiting Manitoba early June this year.

Thank you for your help and all best,
    Malaika

  13. Shirley Harris says:

I have a quilt made by my parents with wool from their sheep. My daughter washed it. We live in Alberta. Do you know of anyone who could recard it.

    Shirley

    • Hi Shirley. I have not found anyone who cards wool. Manitoba has something called Fibre Fest that includes vendors of all things fibre related. Alberta may have something similar? That would be a good place to start in your search. Good luck!
